Say the Right Thing Class 7 Question Answer English Jasmine Chapter 6 13
Answer:
Mrs. Shaw prepared for the arrival of influential guests, Mrs. Harding and Mrs. Lee, coaching her daughter Mary on etiquette. However, Mary’s eagerness and unfiltered honesty led to a series of awkward moments. She mistakenly complimented Mrs. Harding’s non-existent children, offended Mrs. Lee with remarks about bankers, and criticised Mrs. Best’s attire, only to discover Mrs. Harding shared the same taste. The afternoon reached its peak of discomfort when Mary disparaged dirty dogs, describing Mrs. Harding’s own pet, Towzer. Despite her mother’s attempts to salvage the situation, Mary’s final comment, “Oh, must you stay? Can’t you go?” sealed the visit’s fate. The guests departed with strained goodbyes, leaving Mrs. Shaw embarrassed and Mary, unaware of the scene she had unintentionally created, smiled with pride, thinking she had done well at socialising.

G.C. THORNLEY (ଜି.ସି. ଥ୍ରୋନଲେ)

Summary of Play
(ନାଟକ ବିଷୟର ସଂକ୍ଷିପ୍ତ ସାରକଥା):

The play “Say the Right Thing” by G.C. Thornley is a humorous piece about how speaking without thinking can lead to embarrassment. The story revolves around Mary Shaw, a young girl, and her mother, Mrs. Shaw.

At the beginning, Mrs. Shaw instructs Mary to behave properly when guests arrive. She explains that saying polite and kind words at the right time is very important. Mary insists that she knows how to talk and promises to do well. Her mother especially warns her not to say anything rude, and even teaches her to request guests politely to stay longer when they plan to leave.

However, when Mrs. Harding and Mrs. Lee visit, Mary quickly forgets the advice. She begins by complimenting Mrs. Harding on her children, not knowing she has none. Then she criticizes bankers, unaware that Mrs. Lee’s brother is one. She also mocks Mrs. Best’s clothes, only to find Mrs. Harding wears the same. She continues by ridiculing women who stay in bed or consult doctors, only to discover both guests do so themselves. Finally, she insults their dog and even Mr. Pomeroy, who happens to be connected with them.

By the end, when trying to repeat her mother’s advice, she hilariously mixes up the words and says, “Must you stay? Can’t you go?” instead of the opposite.
The play highlights the importance of speaking thoughtfully, being polite, and thinking before we speak.
